TORONTO WEBSITE DESIGN BEST PRACTICES

August 16th, 2012

Website creation is certainly not a one-size-fits-all enterprise, but Toronto website design best practices are short-cuts for new designers and seasoned professionals alike. Why try to reinvent the wheel or fix something that isn’t broken? A 2009 Smashing Magazine study identified some of the most popular Toronto website design elements, including font, paragraph spacing and links. Here’s what they found…

Website Design: Best Fonts

The Serif fonts are the best overall choices for Toronto website design because they look great when resized big or small. Sans-Serif fonts make the most popular headlines, with websites like BBC, CNN, Slate and New Scientists opting for this group, which includes…

  • Arial headlines
  • Helvetica headlines
  • Arial body copy
  • Verdana body copy
  • Lucida body copy

A little over a third of all websites (including the New York Times and Newsweek) use Serif fonts like:

  • Georgia headlines
  • Baskerville headlines
  • Georgia body copy
  • Times new roman body copy

If you can believe it, a whopping 80 percent of all websites use Georgia, Arial and Verdana fonts.

Most headlines are sized anywhere from 18 to 26, with body paragraph fonts sized at 13 pixels.

Website Design: Background Color

Unanimously, white or light-colored Toronto website design is preferred for easy reading.

Website Design: Links

Nearly half of all website owners underline the links in their Toronto website design copy. The rest either highlight the link with a different color or use bolding.
